Veteran actor who starred in ‘Bridget Loves Bernie,’ ‘St. Elsewhere,’ dies after battle with Alzheimer’s

Actor David Birney, best known for roles in the television shows “Bridget Loves Bernie,” and “St. Elsewhere,” died on Wednesday.

He was 83.

Birney had been battling Alzheimer’s, according to reports.

Birney starred alongside Meredith Baxter, whom he later married, in “Bridget Loves Bernie,” which ran from 1972-1973. He had a long film career which also included the stint on “St. Elsewhere,” as long as credits with “Hawaii Five-O,” “The Love Boat,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Murder She Wrote,” “Sliders,” “Star Trek” Deep Space Nine,” and “Without a Trace.”

Birney faced controversy in 2011 after Baxter released her book, “United: A Memoir of Family, Fame and Flounder” and accused him of being emotionally and physically abusive. He denied those claims.

Birney, who was born in Cleveland, Ohio, had a lengthy list of television, movie and stage credits in a career that began in 1969 and ran through 2007.
