History award nominees sought

The Austin History Center Association is seeking nominations for the 2020 Katherine Drake Hart Award, presented to a resident who has made a significant contribution to preserving Austin and Travis County history.

The award was given annually from 1991 to 2006 and revived in 2019 by the association, a 550-member volunteer group that supports and assists the work of the Austin History Center.

Award Committee Chair Charles Peveto said the committee is looking for a person who has made outstanding achievements in the preservation of Austin's history through research and writing books or articles; historic documentation through writing, video or photography; archiving histories of cultural heritage; or preservation by archival donations to the Austin History Center.

Past recipients of the Katherine Drake Hart Award include one of the association's founders, Sue Brandt McBee; longtime UT architecture professor and historian Wayne Bell; and Audrey Bateman Randle, former curator of the Austin-Travis County Collection, which became the Austin History Center.

The 2019 recipient was Dr. Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, founder and director of the Voces Oral History Center at the University of Texas.

Cemetery Chapel has online exhibit

The Oakwood Cemetery Chapel is presenting "To Remember," an online exhibit, through March 31.

The exhibit considers grief, loss and love across cultures, showing different forms of remembrance including burial and funeral practices, memorial anniversaries, cemetery maps and genealogy research. It features photo, video, oral history and digital map content to describe how cultural traditions help us hold the space for grief and loss.

Marbenn Cayetano and Trent Atkins of the city of Austin created a virtual reality 360-degree tour with high resolution photos of the Historic "Old Grounds" and the Oakwood Cemetery Chapel.
