New veterans memorial park concept to be presented at county meeting

Brunswick News - 6/18/2018

June 18--The Glynn County Commission will get a look Tuesday at what may be the final version of a veterans memorial park it plans to build at an empty lot between I and J streets in downtown Brunswick.

According to the meeting agenda, TSW Design architect Peyton Peterson will give the commissioners a rundown of what's changed since the Veterans Memorial Park Committee met last month.

On May 17, the committee recommended Peterson and fellow TSW architect Adam Williamson make a few tweaks, but gave the go-ahead to present the park concept to the commission.

The concept shows a round, raised memorial made of concrete and pavers. Granite monuments to all branches of the military and to Glynn County residents who sacrificed their lives in the armed forces sit on top of the platform, which has a military seal set in the center.

An open grass field and picnic area occupy the middle of the park concept. A parking lot on the I Street side and some on-street parking on J Street would serve the Glynn County Courthouse and Harold Park Courthouse Annex.

Commissioners will also hear a presentation on a Pier Village drainage project from Burke Murph, with Georgia Water & Ecological Services.

Commissioner Peter Murphy shared some details about the project with the public at a town hall meeting on Wednesday. The project is intended to deal with stormwater runoff issues in the village and along Ocean Boulevard.

Public Works Director Dave Austin said drainage pipes would need to run down the middle of Mallery Street, which would likely mean the road would have to be excavated at some point. Murphy also said the end goal would be to drain stormwater from the village into the ocean if the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will allow it.

In other business, the commission will hear an update on the 2018 comprehensive plan from Ecological Planning Group consultant Courtney Reich and events that may restrict access to public beaches and roads.

The meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Old Glynn County Courthouse, 701 G St. in Brunswick.
