Cambria Veterans Court receives $15,000 grant

Tribune-Democrat - 3/28/2018

March 28--EBENSBURG -- Cambria County's Veterans Court will receive a $15,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Veterans' Trust Fund (VTF), according to a news release issued by the Cambria County Veterans Office on Tuesday.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Cambria as one of 13 counties and 18 charitable organizations to receive grant money to support veteran initiatives.

The VTF is funded by Pennsylvanians who make a $3 donation when applying for or renewing their driver's license, photo ID or vehicle registration.

Proceeds also come from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans license plate and private donations.

"The citizens of Pennsylvania continue to show how much they value our veterans through their willingness to voluntarily donate to the Veterans' Trust Fund," Wolf said in a statement.

The latest round of VTF grant recipients included $520,193 in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives, resulting in more than $1.3 million for veterans' initiatives statewide during the next two years.

"I have been fortunate to see firsthand how these organizations that were selected for VTF grants provide critical support to our most needy veterans," said Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania's adjutant general and head of the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

"They are tremendous partners in our communities, working tirelessly to provide programs and services that benefit Pa. veterans."

Cambria County President Commissioner Tom Chernisky said the grant funding will help boost a program that helps veterans and the county overall.

"The Veterans Court program here has in effect saved our county more than $1 million since it was started," he said.

"That's money residents aren't paying to house someone in county prison. Veterans in the program work directly with peer mentors, whose main goal is to help that individual rehabilitate and recover from a mistake."
