Parade Monday

Local military veterans will once again honor Memorial Day with a parade through downtown Canton and ceremony in the village park. The Edwards C. Seymour Veterans of Foreign War Post 1231, Canton, will present the annual event at 10 a.m. on Monday. Participating groups and individuals are asked to be at the Army Reserve Center, West Main Street, by 9:30 a.m. to line up.

Any veteran who desires to participate, but cannot walk the route, will be provided a ride, For a ride, call the club at 315-386-8953. When the procession reaches the Main Street bridge, a wreath will be released into the Grasse River and a ceremony will follow in the village park.

The honor guard will then proceed to Evergreen Cemetery to fire a volley and play taps for deceased World War II veteran Don Gilson.

On this Memorial Day, community members are also asked to think of law enforcement officers who also observe their Memorial Day in May, entitled National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The day will conclude with refreshments served at the VFW Post, Gouverneur Street. The public is invited. VFW Post 123 encourages the public to attend Memorial Day events to honor Canton's veterans and all veterans, on this, their day.
