James E. Thompson, 75, truck driver and Army veteran.

Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - 9/29/2014

Sept. 29--WHEN JIM THOMPSON was growing up in South Philadelphia, he worked for a time at a newsstand across the street from his home on 24th Street.

It was there that he developed an abiding interest in current events, digesting the headlines and stories in the local papers of the happenings of his day.

He carried this interest through his life, and always enjoyed engaging family and friends in discussions of what was going on in the world, including the successes and failures of the Philly sports teams, especially his favorite, the Flyers.

His family "enjoyed his sharp wit, his ability to discuss news and sports events, and his honest opinion on any subject," his family said.

James E. Thompson, a 30-year truck driver and Army veteran, died of pneumonia on Sept. 10. He was 75 and lived in Alexandria, Va.

Jim enjoyed being a truck driver and drove for various companies, traveling both long-distance and local routes.

He was born in Philadelphia to Nathanaiel R. Thompson, a Philadelphia police detective sergeant, and Dorothy B. Thompson.

Jim entered the Army and served stateside for two years. He held a number of jobs before becoming a truck driver.

He was the brother of Lt. Gen. Nathaniel R. "Ross" Thompson Jr., commanding general of the 21st Support Command in Europe and former Army inspector general, who died in June 2011.

Jim was a devoted caregiver for his mother, and after moving to Virginia in 2007 to be near his family, was himself doted on.

In particular, niece Barbara T. Burns "lovingly assisted him at every level to ensure he was comfortable and well-cared for," his family said.

"He affectionately called her 'my girl,' and was a most devoted fan of her famously delicious meals and deserts," his family said.

"Jim will be missed by all who were blessed to know him, especially his family, who enjoyed his company and presence throughout their lives."

He had no immediate survivors.

Services: Memorial service will be arranged.
