Hawley Magic show, tribute to guitarist Ray Ledford this weekend

Sep. 20--This weekend includes a magic and illusion show at the Don Gibson Theatre, community and high school reunions and a program at Lawndale Museum playing tribute to local guitarist Ray Ledford.

Friday

Remembering Hugh Hunt: The U.S. Army veteran and WWII prisoner of war will be honored at a 3 p.m. funeral at New Home United Methodist Church, 544 Moriah School Road, Casar. People in the community plan to line the streets of Casar from Casar Road to Moriah School Road from 2-3 p.m. Homeowners are encouraged to display flags near the road or by mail boxes. Hunt was 97 years old. He landed on Omaha Beach on the fourth day of the Normandy invasion. While helping a wounded soldier, he was captured by the enemy. He spent 10 months in German prison camps and was later liberated.

Saturday

Pet CPR and first aid class: Clifford's Army Rescue hosts the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the LeGrand Center, 1800 E. Marion St., Shelby. Registration fee of $69.95 includes a color interactive e-book or $94.95 for e-book and printed book. For more information call 704-460-9030.

Burns High reunion: Members of the class of 1969 have a meet-and-greet celebrating their 50th reunion at 5:30 p.m.Historic Stamey Store Event Center, 4726 Fallston Road, Fallston, hosts the event. Hawley Magic: Entertainers Jonathan and Trisha Hawley perform their magic and illusions show at 7 p.m. at the Don Gibson Theatre, 318 S. Washington St., Shelby. The show features up-close magic and on-stage, Las Vegas-style illusions. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $10 for children. The venue has a special offer available. Nature and Heritage Festival: Kings Mountain National Military Park, 2625 Park Road, Blacksburg, S.C., hosts the event from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Festival admission is free. Activities center on the experience and enjoyment of nature and history. Learn outdoor survival skills and the art of fire with trainers from REI in classes at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. Practice map and compass reading with the Carolina Orienteering Klubb, then put your new skills to the test on a short beginner orienteering courses on the park backcountry hiking trail. Experience wildlife with two of the Carolina Raptor Center's feathered friends from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn about the reptiles that call South Carolina home from the S.C. Herpetological Society in programs at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Take nature walks with flora and fauna experts from the Catawba Master Naturalists at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Create your own nature-themed crafts and check out our hands-on displays of some of the wildlife that call the park home. Enjoy regional music with the Log Cabin String Band from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Witness and try your hand at colonial trades and crafts with the park's backcountry militia from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and make your own crafts to take home. Venture with a ranger on the battlefield trail at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and hear a history talk on the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution at 4 p.m. Nocturnal Notions in Your National Park is offered from 8-10 p.m. Gaze with the Carolina Skygazers and their state-of-the-art telescopes on the front lawn, make night-themed crafts, and go on nighttime sensory walks.

Sunday

Lawndale Museum: A program pays tribute to Lawndale native musician Ray Ledford at 2 p.m. The museum is at 119 Piedmont Drive, Lawndale. He not only plays guitar but builds them. He's taught aspiring musicians in Cleveland County to play guitar. The program is part of the Piedmont High School reunion held Aug. 10.
