Riding for veterans

The Sampson Independent - 9/19/2019

Sep. 17--As a member of the Wyld Boar Ryderz, Glenn Vann finds enjoyment in gripping the handlebars of his motorcycle and riding through the countryside.

"I get a peace of mind and I just love it," Vann said. "If you got any problems, you can go out and escape them."

During a special event on Saturday, he had fun revving up his engine for veterans who served their country. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7547 hosted the first Motorcycle and Car Ride Saturday with 25 participants rolling through the roads of Sampson County. Proceeds from the event are going toward operations to help veterans.

"We've got to support the men and women who went out and fought for the country," Vann said. "I feel real good about it. They don't get the recognition that they deserve, so anything we can do as a group to help support them, we're happy to do it."

The route started at the post and continued through areas such as Harrells, Garland, Roseboro, Spivey's Corner and Newton Grove. Along with the Wyld Boar Ryderz of Clinton, some of the other participants represented the Buffalo Soldiers and the Spiritual Riders. Senior Vice Commander Avon Jones enjoyed watching participants spread awareness about the ride and the organization through the Facebook page.

"It went very well," Jones said. "They enjoyed it and they enjoyed the fellowship."

Ricky Caldwell, a member of the Wyld Boar Ryderz, said it's a great opportunity to be involved with the event and fellowship with others.

"It's a wonderful thing to support the veterans," he said. "It's like giving a little bit back to the ones who gave to us."

Along with others, VFW member Jimmy Densel McLamb is pushing for more veterans to join organizations such as the VFW and support events such as the Saturday's ride. He enjoyed supporting it as a member of the Spiritual Riders.

"This bike ride today puts money back into the organization," he said. "The more fundraisers that we have and the more help (we receive) from others, it's going to help the veterans and people on the outside."

Throughout the year, members of VFW Post 7547 provide services to organizations and ceremonies during special occasions such as Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Luther Pegues, president of the Wild Boar Ryderz, accepted a cash award for having the most riders during the event. On behalf of the organization, he gave it back to the post to show his appreciation for veterans

"They put their life on the line for this country," he said. "Anytime you have a chance to give back, that's what it's all about."
